Unlike the standard quintet, in which a string quartet is joined by a 2nd viola or 2nd cello, this ensemble features the double bass as an additional instrument. All five string sections of the orchestra are thus represented, enabling the Philharmonie String Quintet to go beyond the conventional limits of a chamber ensemble and achieve a truly symphonic dimension.
