For those who visit them, those who intentionally avoid them, and those who are involuntarily kept away from them, museums have an obvious value, as well as a certain aura. They are an integral part of our cultural landscape, and no one would dream of questioning them. So much so that the museum itself forgets to question itself...
Born in France during the revolutionary turmoil - admittedly a little earlier in the rest of Europe - the museum is nonetheless a recent institution on the scale of human history, and its existence has sometimes been the subject of violent criticism, even radical rejection. Accused of being a prison for art, a graveyard for dead works, a legacy of colonial culture, an instrument of domination, an anachronism, etc., the museum is a strange machine that has not always been self-evident! Where do these criticisms come from, what are they based on, are they still relevant today, and how do they resonate with our tormented present? The conference will attempt to answer these complex questions.
