    OPERA AND CITIZENSHIP
Art, a privileged means of understanding reality

    J. M. Pire, historian and sociologist, specialist in cultural and artistic education policies, researcher at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, will discuss with us the question of the relationship between art, education and democracy at a time in our society when market logic is invading everything, right down to the most intimate private sphere, when thinking, taking a step back, reading and meditating are all a waste of time, when free time is no longer used for self-improvement, but rather for dizzying consumption and entertainment.

The first part of this meeting will be devoted to a presentation of the concept of otium, an indispensable foundation for a living democracy. Indeed, there is an urgent need to rehabilitate this fruitful leisure activity, which Bourdieu already considered "a universal anthropological possibility", and thus enable a fruitful return to oneself, opening up the possibility of politically and spiritually constructing the conditions for our freedom to think and act.

The second part of the meeting will be devoted to exchanges with the audience, and participants will certainly have a lot to say. This will enable us to engage in constructive exchanges on the various points raised, and to take full advantage of this time of enlightened leisure that we are allowing ourselves this morning.
