Located in the Primatiale district (today's Cathedral), this brick and stone residence was built in 1619 for Pierre de Stainville, Grand Dean of the Primatiale. Above the entrance porch sits a bust of Duke Henri II, a copy by Bussière, the original of which is in the Musée Lorrain.
This is one of the earliest mansions to use red brick and black brick lozenges, giving it all its appeal. Alternating brick and stone was not very common in Lorraine, and the dukes used this motif to build Renaissance fortifications, some of which can still be seen at Porte Saint-Georges and Porte Notre-Dame.
Inside, the superb straight staircase, with its several flights and landings, is the masterpiece of this building.
