For a long time, I've wanted to evoke the statue of Sergeant Blandan, the ghost I first came across
I first came across on my way to Boufarik, in Algeria's Mitidja region, at the age of 10, at the height of the Battle of Algiers, and which I've now rediscovered in Nancy. The colonization of my country has left its mark, in particular the silences that I have unconsciously passed on to my two daughters born in France and to my grandchildren. The question I asked my mother: "What's that statue... Ach koun Hada?" The answer was: "Eat your orange and shut up!... koul ouskout".
Ever since that day, I've wanted to know who's behind that statue. Why did the French come to occupy Algeria? Who is this Sergeant Blandan?
