Given the extraordinary flowering of museums around the world since at least the 1990s, and their success with a wide variety of audiences, we might well wonder whether the whole planet isn't going to end up behind a glass case... This proliferation almost makes us forget that the museum is a recent institution, and that its history is not paved with success. Even today, some museums are closing, others are dying, abandoned or ruined, and some are being looted and destroyed. They all speak to us of the state of our society. Is it possible to make a history of museums that considers them as organisms and puts them in their rightful place in the history of human inventiveness? What vision of culture do they convey, and how is it constructed throughout history?
