Three exhibitions as part of the Year of Photography

Photography will soon be two hundred years old, two centuries during which it has shaped our way of apprehending and understanding the world. Although it does not fall into the traditional categories of the fine arts, its legitimacy as an art form is no longer in question. Photography is just as capable of expressing beauty as drawing or painting.
Without waiting for an official commemoration date, photography in all its manifestations and forms is celebrated in Nancy during a rich and multifaceted "photographic year", starting in May 2024. It will conclude in June 2025, with the Événement photographique.

    PIONEERS!
The Société lorraine de Photographie et de Cinématographie (1894-1983)
AN EXHIBITION PRESENTED BY IMAGE'EST AS PART OF THE YEAR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, photography broke away from the rigid, static setting of the professional photographer's studio to conquer nature, thanks to the invention of hand-held cameras and the gelatin-silver process. The practice was democratized, and amateurs tried their hand at it, soon forming associations all over France. Above all, photography was transformed from a simple documentary medium, capturing the memory of a deceased person or a wedding, into a veritable artistic discipline.

The Société lorraine de photographie was founded on February 21, 1894 in Nancy. At the time, it was part of a large national and international network of societies that corresponded with each other and fostered a climate of emulation and progress. Doctors, lawyers, politicians, clerics, aristocrats, scientists, artists and industrialists gathered around this burgeoning technique, discussing it at meetings and practicing it on organized excursions.

Through an immersive scenography and a selection of works and objects combining photographs, films, archival documents and photographic equipment, the exhibition designed in collaboration with Nancy's Musée des Beaux-Arts offers a lively and sensitive evocation of the Société's artistic and human epic.

Curated by Camille Brasi, Blaise Aurora and Mathieu Rousseau - Pôle patrimoine d'Image'Est and Susana Gállego-Cuesta, Chief Curator, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy.
